We will print a small run of your book for a low start-up fee and then reprint it as you need copies. The basic package includes:

layout of your digital manuscript
standard cover design
2 proof copies
10 final copies

All for the low cost of Can$499.00 plus tax.

Additional copies of your book can be printed, as few as 10 at a time, for between $5.00 and $15.00 a copy, depending on paper quality, number of pages and cover choice.

You control the rights to your book and the profits.

What do I do next?

If you have a manuscript in Word (or some other digital formats - check with us), you are almost there. Your manuscript should be edited and very carefully proofread. If you need help with this, we can refer you to professionals who can get your work into shape. This can be expensive, however, so it's best to do as much as possible of the editing yourself and with friends and family.

Take a word count of your manuscript - in MS Word that's under "Tools". The word count will help us determine how many pages will be in your book. That will be important for format choices and cost per copy as the book is printed.

Submit the manuscript to us:

on a CD, clearly labelled
as an email attachment to publish@chelseabooks.ca
if this is a poetry book, please also provide a hard copy so that we can see exactly how you'd like your poems to appear on the page.
At the moment we are printing black&white interiors only but we are able to provide full colour covers. Please look at the examples here. Cover options include:
you provide the design
we work with you to create a simple eye-catching design
we refer you to a designer

Once we (you and Chelsea Books) have agreed on a format, we will sign a contract which spells out the scope of the work involved and sets a price per copy for any books in addition to the 10 copies included in the basic package.

You can expect the layout and production of the first proof of the book to be done within one month. Then, you will need a couple of weeks to review the proof(s). Once changes have been incorporated and a cover design finalized, it takes 2 to 3 weeks to produce the finished books. If you have a deadline for production of the book, it is wise to start the publishing process 2 months previous to it. It is possible to move the process along more quickly but there is a premium attached to this because of overtime involved.
